What
is Nexium used for and how does it work? Nexium
is the brand name for a drug called esomeprazole (“ease-oh-mep-ra-zol”).
Nexium is used for the treatment of acid-related disorders
such as:
- reflux esophagitis (tissue damage caused by stomach
content flowing back up the digestive tract);
- duodenal ulcers caused by infection with a bacterium
called Helicobacter pylori , and to help reduce the
risk of these ulcers from coming back;
- gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and its symptoms
such as: a burning sensation rising from the chest
towards the neck (heartburn) and the flow of bitter/sour
juice into the mouth (regurgitation).
Nexium works by reducing the amount of acid made in
your stomach.
Your doctor will have explained why you are being treated
with Nexium and will have told you what dose to take.
Follow those directions carefully. They may differ from
the information contained in this leaflet.
What is in Nexium?
Each Nexium tablet contains esomeprazole magnesium trihydrate
as the active ingredient. In addition, it contains the
following nonmedicinal ingredients: cellulose microcrystalline,
crospovidone, glyceryl monostearate, hydroxypropylcellulose,
hypromellose, iron oxide, magnesium stearate, methacrylic
acid ethylacrylate copolymer, polyethylene glycol, polysorbate,
synthetic paraffin, sodium stearyl fumarate, sugar spheres,
talc, titanium dioxide and triethyl citrate.
Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you think you
may be allergic to any of the above ingredients.
What should I tell my doctor
before taking Nexium? Tell your doctor:
- about all health problems you have now or have had
in the past;
- about other medicines you take, including ones you
can buy without a prescription;
- if you are allergic to “nonmedicinal”
substances which may be present in Nexium (see “What
is in Nexium?”);
- if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or
are breast-feeding.
How
do I take Nexium properly? Take all doses
of Nexium, as recommended by your doctor, even when
you feel well. In some cases, daily doses are needed
to control your pain and symptoms and to help damaged
areas heal. The recommended dose for treating acute
disease is 20 to 40 mg once a day for 4 to 8 weeks.
Your doctor may recommend that you continue taking Nexium
20 mg each day to prevent your symptoms from coming
back.
Nexium may be used in combination with antibiotic drugs
for 1 week to treat ulcers caused by H.pylori and to
help reduce the risk of these ulcers from coming back.
Your prescription may say Nexium 1-2-3 A. This tells
the pharmacist to give you 3 different drugs (Nexium
and 2 antibiotics) for you to take 2 times each day
for 1 week.
If you are given Nexium in combination with antibiotic
drugs, it is important that you take all medications
at the correct time of day and for the entire treatment
period, to ensure they will work properly. Studies have
shown that patients who take their medications as prescribed,
have better ulcer healing rates and greater success
getting rid of their H.pylori infection.
It is important to take Nexium until your doctor tells
you to stop, even if you start to feel better in a few
days. Nexium needs to be taken for the full duration
of treatment to help correct acid problems.
If you miss a dose of Nexium, and remember within 12
hours, take the tablet as soon as possible then go back
to your regular schedule. However, if more than 12 hours
has passed when you remember, do not take the missed
tablet. Just take your next dose on time.
Nexium may be taken with food or on an empty stomach.
The tablet may be swallowed whole with water or it may
be put in half a glass of water where it will break
apart, making it easier to swallow. Be sure to swallow
all the tiny pellets that come out of the tablet without
chewing them. Don't let the pellets sit in water for
more than 30 minutes before drinking them. After drinking,
rinse the glass with water and drink this as well.
How do I use the Nexium compliance
pack? Nexium comes in blister packages containing
14 tablets. Each package contains 2 blister strips that
are labeled with the days of the week.
Start by taking a tablet that matches the day you begin
the pack. Then take a tablet on each of the following
days until you complete the blister strip.
To treat ulcers caused by H.pylori , take one 20 mg
tablet from each of 2blister strips (2 tablets/day)
that match the day you begin the pack.
Are
there any side effects? Like any medication,
Nexium may cause side effects in some people. Side effects
that do occur are usually mild and go away a short time
after starting Nexium. Tell your doctor if any of the
following are severe or bother you for more than 1 or
2 days: nausea, stomach upset, diarrhea, headache, dizziness
or dry mouth. These may not be caused by Nexium in your
case, but only a doctor can assess this.
Other unwanted effects which cannot be predicted may
occur in rare cases. These may include rash or itching.
If you experience any bothersome or unusual effects
while using Nexium, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
What should I do in case of
overdose? Call your doctor or pharmacist
right away in case of an overdose. However, no severe
symptoms have been seen in patients who have taken doses
up to 80 mg.
Where should I keep Nexium?
Keep all tablets sealed in the blister strips until
it is time for a dose. If you do not, moisture from
the air may damage the tablets.
Remember to keep Nexium well out of reach of children.
Keep the compliance pack at room temperature (15 to
30°C). Do not keep Nexium in the bathroom medicine
cabinet or other warm, moist places.
Do not use Nexium after the expiry date marked on the
pack.
Important Note: This information alerts you
to some of the times you should call your doctor. Other
situations which cannot be predicted may arise. Nothing
in this information should stop you from calling your
doctor or pharmacist with any questions or concerns
you have about using Nexium.
